Whether you are just a casual star-gazer or looking to start your journey toward becoming an amateur astronomer, we have the perfect course for you. 

We emphasize hands-on learning that makes science and technology fun with a wide range of courses for adults.

The Night Sky

Join us on an informative trip through our night sky. Learn how to locate and identify stars, constellations, deep-sky objects, and other celestial objects.  Explore general sky motions, the celestial co-ordinate sphere, constellation mythology, solar and lunar eclipses, telescopes and astrophotography.

Price includes all handouts, a sky chart, a planisphere, the RASC Beginner’s Observing Guide and evening snacks. Throughout the course, students will enjoy use of an inflatable planetarium dome theatre, the RASC Observatory and the Parkview Room at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton. 

This is also an excellent course for teachers teaching Grade 6 Sky Science, or for anyone with a general interest in astronomy!

Star Gazing

If you've always had an interest in learning more about the night sky, but didn't know how to get started, this two-night program is sure to get you on your way.  You'll learn how to use a planisphere to find objects in the sky, explore freeware astronomy software and smartphone apps that will show you where stars, constellations and planets are from any location on the Earth. You'll even get to sit under a simulated night sky insider our inflatable planetarium, and look through high-quality telescopes (weather permitting) at various objects in our night sky. A great way to start your journey in amateur astronomy!

Dates Available: April 5 & 12, 2018

The 1-2-3's of Telescope Use

Let us show you how to make the most out of your telescope.  Discover how to properly set up your telescope, how to use setting circles or your computerized telescope to find celestial bodies, what accessories would be useful to you and how to take care of and perform proper maintenance of your telescope. Course fee will include a planisphere and handouts.  

Registrants are welcome to bring their telescope to this course, but it is not a requirement.  If individuals are interested, and have the time, they can bring their telescope outside near the RASC Observatory after the formal course ends at 6:00 p.m. to learn how to use their telescope under the real sky (weather permitting) under the guidance of the course instructor.

Dates Available: Saturday, February 10 or Saturday, March 17, 2018

 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Fee: $75.00 + GST 

Purchase a telescope through TELUS World of Science – Edmonton Gift Shop (retail value of $200.00 +) and pay just $25.00 + GST for the 1-2-3’s of Telescope Use course. 

After purchase is made, you can formally register in this course by:

  3. Provide your voucher number, your name, contact information and date of desired course.
