Join us as we explore all aspects of Cannabis from the medicinal, to the recreational.

Event Highlights:

Join us for the Cannabis Speaker Series in the IMAX Theatre. This Speaker Series will be first-come, first-served and seating is limited.

  • 7:00 p.m. Cannabis and the Police: Local RCMP officer, Corporal Richard Nowak, will chat about the legal history of cannabis in Canada and how this all changes on October 17, 2018. Corporal Nowak will also discuss how RCMP will determine impaired cannabis drivers.

  • 7:30 p.m. Cannabis as a Medicine: What do we really know? (Please note: this presentation takes place in the Zeidler Dome) Dr. Jason Dyck from the University of Alberta, delves into the potential medical benefits and risks of using cannabis to treat diseases and ailments. Despite a long history of anecdotal evidence supporting the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis, political and social influences have significantly hindered research efforts into examining these therapies. Dr. Dyck will discuss how even today there remains a significant knowledge gap for physicians attempting to accommodate patients, and a lack of critical information that would enable physicians to provide informed, evidence-based healthcare.

  • 7:45 p.m. & 8:30 p.m. Cannabis: Everything You Always Wanted to Know, But Were Afraid to Ask: Join Dr. Jan Slaski from Innotech Alberta as he clears up common cannabis misconceptions. Dr. Slaski will explore the differences between low THC cannabis (aka. industrial hemp) and high THC cannabis (aka. marijuana), the opportunities and challenges associated to introducing these crops, and the impact cannabis will have on diversification of the Canadian economy.

  • 9:30 p.m. Plants vs. Humans: How Cannabis Affects Your Body: Dr. Martin Davies from the University of Alberta will examine how specific chemicals found in Cannabis plants are able to change the function of your brain and body. In particular, how THC changes the way in which neurons talk to one another. He’ll also investigate why our brains are so sensitive to this plant chemical.

Participate in these fun and engaging activities, as you learn all about the fascinating Science of Cannabis with help from local guest experts and our very own staff scientists. These activities are ongoing throughout the evening:
