What is Bird Banding and Why is it Useful?

Written by: Jenny Niemi, Science Presenter

In 1977, an injured Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) was turned into a wildlife rescue in New York state. The blackbird, which was 15 years and 9 months old upon intake, was rehabilitated and later released. This individual is the oldest wild Red-winged Blackbird ever recorded. How did the wildlife rescue know that this blackbird was almost 16 years old and how do scientists know how long animals live in the wild?

A great way to spend an afternoon

This is a popular place for kids from 3 to 70+ The interactive elements are a hit with the kids, as are the "parties" that include tours and pizza. The gift shop is crammed with fun things too and the picnic styled restaurant offers a welcome respite after your visit. The IMAX shows films that appeal to families of all ages. We saw the film "Cuba" and enjoyed it as we have many films before.

Even if the kids will not come with you, a great place to enjoy the movie and exhibits!

A great place to take curious minds, young and old. Plan for a full morning or afternoon, or maybe a day, to take in everything.

Fun and Educational not always an oxymoron!

Lots of fun for the whole family, lots of hands on activities, experiments to watch and participate in. There are special exhibitions that come, like the Harry potter, Animals Inside Out and many many more, also the IMAX theater always playing the best science and nature films, and the planetarium that has been updated hosts amazing shows too. Just amazing, Defiantly in the top 5 things to do in Edmonton for families!
