  • Calling All Current and Future Climate Heroes!

Take action for the planet by signing up for the GenAction Virtual Climate Summit and become a driving force for change.

On October 30, 2024, a full day of climate science will feature local climate heroes and researchers. As part of the GenAction initiative, this event aims to inspire youth to become leaders in climate action now and in the future.

The summit includes multiple 45-minute sessions for students in Grades K-12, offering climate education tailored to different age groups. Classes can choose to participate in one or more of these sessions.

A classroom survey is required before and after the program to measure impact.

Dr. Valerie Miller

Valerie Miller is the Edmonton Space & Science Foundation's 2024 Science Fellow and a dedicated advocate for climate action and STEM outreach. With a PhD in land reclamation, Valerie is the Outreach and Engagement Lead for Future Energy Systems at the University of Alberta. She is passionate about bridging the gap between researchers and the community, connecting them through classroom visits, lab tours, and events like Science Rendezvous. Valerie's volunteer work with organizations such as TELUS World of Science - Edmonton and Let’s Talk Science reflects her commitment to inspiring the next generation of climate leaders.

Helen Panter

Fifteen years ago, Helen Panter didn’t expect to work for Parks Canada. Now, as a Public Outreach and Education Officer, she shares the importance of Wood Buffalo, Nahanni, Nááts’įhch’oh, and Thaidene National Park Reserves. Helen has connected with over 70,000 students through virtual presentations, creating interactive sessions with custom décors and 3D models. Her passion for engagement shines through, and she believes every day should involve learning, smiling, and laughing

Jeremiah Bryksa

Jeremiah Bryksa is an analytical chemist with over 13 years of experience in Edmonton laboratories. He uses cutting-edge technology to study environmental contaminants across Alberta. On April 17th, he’ll share insights into his research and discuss what it’s like to be a chemist in Alberta, using applied science to tackle real-world problems

Keri Malanchuk

Keri Malanchuk is a research assistant at Environment and Climate Change Canada studying cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and the toxins they produce. Growing up in Calgary she spent a lot of her time exploring the mountains and learning about nature. With an interest in science, she did a bachelor’s degree at the University of Alberta studying biochemistry and environmental science. Following her degree, she worked for the Alberta Lake Management Society for a summer sampling 12 lakes in Northern Alberta. She then went on to complete a master's degree at Carleton University using chemistry to study environmental toxicology.
