Virtual Camps FAQ

Are in person camps running this summer?

We have made the decision to continue with only virtual camps this summer, due to both the evolving COVID-19 circumstances as well as the ongoing Aurora Project Construction in our building. Throughout this pandemic we have been proceeding with an abundance of caution regarding the safety of our guests and staff. While it is true that many Albertans will be vaccinated with at least one dose in the coming months, children 12 and under, who are our target campers, will not be. This virus can still be carried in people who have been vaccinated and therefore, can be passed on to those who are not. Our ultimate goal is to keep children safe and mitigate any risk that still exists with these youngsters.

What is a virtual camp?

Since you can’t come to the science centre, we are bringing the science centre to you - right in your very own home! Through a mixture of live online sessions, exclusive access to exciting videos, and engaging independent activities, all curated by the science team from TELUS World of Science – Edmonton, your children will have a blast. All you need is a device with an internet connection!

What technology is needed?

All camps require an electronic device and internet access. Most tablets, desktop computers or laptops should work well.

However, for Coding Camps or Clubs, participants will need a desktop or laptop computer (equipped with either Windows 10 or Mac OSX) and some basic computer skills in order to perform tasks independently.

I don't have a laptop or desktop computer, so can I use a tablet for the Coding camps?

A tablet can be used, however, if a tablet is used, it is highly recommended that the participant use an additional device (another tablet or phone, for example) for the virtual session. One device for the coding activities and one device to access the Microsoft Teams meeting.

It is very difficult to do both the coding program and the Teams meeting on one device and campers in the past have had a lot of frustration trying to do both on one device.

Will my child be in front of a screen all day?

No! While your child will have daily live sessions with their camp instructor, these sessions are between 90-120 minutes. When not in a session, your child can choose to participate in one of the many independent camp activities. Activities may include, but are not limited to: digital scavenger hunts, pre-recorded video demonstrations, household experiments, and outdoor exploration.

If I don't live in Edmonton, can I still register my child for a virtual camp?

You bet! These camps are available across the province and the nation, geography is not a limitation with our Virtual Camps. Visit here to learn more about all the offered fall and winter programs.

My child is 7, but wants to join a camp or club meant for 10-12 year olds, can they do this?

While we understand that some children may want to participate in camps or clubs for older children, we don’t encourage them to do so. The nature of these virtual camps and clubs means that the children participating must be able to do activities independently. Younger children will find these activities more difficult and may require a great deal of help from their adult. The virtual camp or club leader won’t always be able to assist in the way the child needs.

How do I register?

Once you have chosen a camp, click on the registration link and follow the prompts.

What about supplies?

You will receive a “Welcome to Virtual Camp or Club” email about 1 week before the start of your program. This email will include a list of items you will need to gather before the program begins. Most of the materials will be items that you may already have at home or are easy to find at dollar stores or grocery stores. The welcome email will also include the contact information for the Camp or Club Leader, if you have questions about supplies or activities, please contact them.

What happens if I have to cancel my camp booking?

Refunds will be granted upon written email request 14 days prior to the first day of registered virtual camp. No refund/transfer will be issued with less than 14 days’ notice before camp start date. An administration fee of $15.00 will be assessed on all refunds/transfers. Please direct cancellation emails to bookings@twose.ca.

What happens if I have to miss a day of camp?

It is the responsibility of the camp participant’s family to ensure they have the proper technical requirements and that campers log into their registered virtual camp session at the correct time. Missed sessions will not be made up. If your child must miss a session and is aware of this ahead of the camp start date, arrangements can be made with the Camp Instructor to switch a session time for one day.

Our policy in all virtual programs is Respect for All.

We ask that all TELUS World of Science – Edmonton Virtual Camp participants cooperate in making our camps a safe, fun, and respectful place. We expect that camp participants will treat themselves, other participants, and camp staff with kindness and respect. Virtual campers who do not meet these expectations may not be able to participate in activities or may be asked to leave the camp.
