Virtual Summer Camps - July 6 through August 28

The ultimate summer adventure is just a click away!

TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, TELUS Spark (Calgary), and TELUS have partnered to bring summer science camps directly to you with these online camps!

All you need, for these week-long camps, is a device (desktop, laptop, tablet) with an internet connection and your child can participate in our small group sessions where they can have fun while exploring and experiencing animals, nature, space, science and so much more!

Enjoy daily camp content and activities for 4-6 hours per day, including virtual group instruction time with our expert camp instructors.

Right in Your Own Backyard!

Whether you live in the city or the country, backyards in Alberta are filled with all sorts of natural wonders! Join us Right in your Own Backyard as we escape our houses and explore the nature our outdoor spaces have to offer. Take virtual tours of yards from around Alberta, earn points through virtual nature scavenger hunts, enjoy virtual animal encounters with the science centre animals, and create objects that will attract new life to your own backyard.

You are an alien from another galaxy and your ship has just crash-landed on Earth! You are now on a mission to find out more about this little blue planet and the beings who live on it.

Your Human Guide will introduce you to this planet through virtual games, teach you ways to communicate with Earthlings, help you share stories about your home planet, and encourage you to do some star gazing.

Alberta’s Nature - Incredible and Adaptable

Instructor Times: 9:00-11:00, 12:00-2:00, or 2:30-4:30 MDT

Alberta is full of plants and animals with some pretty incredible adaptations. Explore a world that’s hidden in plain sight as you explore your yard or local green space. Guided by your camp instructor, you will participate in virtual scavenger hunts, discover the reasons behind some strange animal and plant adaptations, create your own amazing creatures, and do virtual visits with the creatures living at the science centre.

Do you have what it takes to survive on Mars?

As part of the first team of humans to live on Mars you must work to ensure that you can survive and thrive on this strange planet. Each day Mission Control will assign you a new task in science, technology, engineering and math. Complete these tasks to earn food, water and oxygen for your colony on Mars.

Coding for Video Games 1.0

This camp offers gamers the ultimate challenge: design and construct a video game using MakeCode !

Campers learn the basics including creating levels, adding characters, objects, behaviours, and sounds. They will be able to access their game online and continue improving it after camp is over. When campers aren’t working on games of their own, our instructors will provide game-based challenges using Minecraft EDU software.

Do a deep dive into all aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) in this virtual science camp just for girls!

In this challenge based virtual camp, you will think outside the box as you test your skills in all things STEAM. Learn how Alberta women working in STEAM fields are making a difference every day.

Ages 5 to 6 - July 6, August 4 & 17 (Daily live interaction hours are 9:00 - 10:00 am and 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm MT)

Do you see stories on TV? In books? Can you tell a story using only shadows? How about adding your own noises? Let's explore storytelling through play! This camp is all about unleashing your creativity in diverse forms. Younger age groups will play with noise effects and animate scenes while older groups will play improv games and talk to a journalist who tells stories daily.

Every camp is one-week long and includes:

Spark values the richness of human diversity and welcomes girls from all walks of life, identities, and lived experiences to feel a sense of belonging in this girl-focused learning environment. This camp includes daily exploration of women’s contributions to science, chances to interact with science mentors, and socialize with like-minded girls who talk science!

Every camp is one-week long and includes:

Build Your Own World

Ages 7 to 10 - July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24 (Daily live interaction hours are 11:00 am - 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm MT)

This entirely digital camp features daily Minecraft map content and puzzles for you to explore. This isn’t a single player experience, though, since we’ll be world-building in collaborative and individual projects! Non-Minecraft activities will include chances to meet real builders, engineers, and cube art projects.

Requirements: personal computer capable of running Minecraft; some parental participation is required to set up software

Every camp is one-week long and includes:

Summer is a season to get up and move! This camp for all abilities has daily challenges that make you move, bend, and stretch. Campers will get the chance to meet athletes and talk the science behind sport and nutrition in an inclusive environment.

Requirements: Enough space to move – enough room to dance around it’s enough, but a back yard is better.

Every camp is one-week long and includes:
-Two one-hour blocks each day of live online interaction with Spark staff and invited science and sport expert guests

Get outside, ask some questions and explore the answers in this nature-themed science camp. Kids will get the chance to interact live with nature experts from Parks Canada and the City of Calgary. This camp will feature activities about ecosystems, plants and the great outdoors!

Requirements: access to an outdoor space and some parental participation.

Every camp is one-week long and includes:
-Two one-hour blocks each day of live online interaction with Spark staff and invited nature guides and curious critters
-Exclusive activities and projects that take you outside
-Up to 1 hour of additional video content sent to your inbox each morning

Do head-scratching challenges get you tinkering? Let’s use our creativity to solve some big problems! This camp is all about the process of designing by trying and refining. Invent a solution to help Spark re-open and meet a real inventor. Challenges can be done with diverse materials from spaghetti to Lego, but a list of recommended supplies is below.

Recommended supplies:
- paper and something to draw with
- cardboard recycling (start saving ahead of camp)
- glue or tape
- K’NEX, LEGO, or other building kits
