Digital Skills Week: Creative Coders

Recommended for: Grades 4-6

Where do you use code? Math, science, and.... well any subject! Students will learn coding concepts and then apply them creatively to visual art, poetry, and music. Students will then create a multimedia art project in Scratch to demonstrate what they’ve learned!.

    - An algorithm is a sequence of instructions
    - Artifacts are objects or products made through the process of design
    - Plan and create an artifact to meet a need
  • [ELA] How can development of writing processes and expression support effective communication?
  • [Visual Arts] How can a narrative contribute to creating and presenting artworks?
  • [Music] How can a narrative contribute to creating and presenting music?

Grade 5

  • [Science – Computer Science] In what ways can design be used to help achieve desired outcomes or purposes?
    - Design can be used to create algorithms and translate them into code
    - Translate a given algorithm to code using a visual block based language
    - A loop is a repetition of instructions used in an algorithm
  • [ELA] How does proficient writing enhance communication skills?
  • [Visual Arts] How can narrative in visual arts contribute to understanding diverse stories and experiences?

Grade 6

  • [Science – Computer Science] In what ways are abstraction, design, and coding related?
    - The process of abstraction includes what to keep and what to ignore
    - Apply abstraction during the design process
    - Structures used in coding include sequences, conditionals, and loops
    - Conditional structures are statements that tell computers to complete different actions based on different situations.
  • [ELA] How is precise writing influenced by ongoing craft and process development?
  • [Visual Arts] How can artistic intention strengthen communication of ideas in visual arts?
  • [Music] How can artistic intention strengthen communication of musical ideas?

Classes cost $225.00 for 4 x 45-minute sessions over four days
Additional classes booked by the same school are $50.00 per class.
