Meet The Panellists

Dr. Ing Swie Goping

Dr. Goping is a leading breast cancer researcher and Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta, holding the McCullough Chair in Breast Cancer Research.

Her work focuses on understanding how breast cancer spreads and resists treatment. Using advanced sequencing technologies, her team is identifying new therapies to prevent relapse and improve patient outcomes.

Brenda Brix

Brenda Brix is an award-winning interior designer, business strategist, and breast cancer survivor who uses her experience to guide others in building lives and businesses they truly want.

As a patient advisor, she helps healthcare teams understand the patient experience, ensuring care is compassionate and effective. Brenda believes in using her voice to turn challenge into change, continually striving to make both business and healthcare more empathy-led.

Dr. Maya Shmulevitz

Maya Shmulevitz is a Canada Research Chair in Molecular Virology and Immunotherapy and a professor at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on harnessing reoviruses as cancer therapies and vaccines.

Her laboratory has revealed and exploited molecular details about reoviruses that are essential towards re-engineering this harmless virus into vaccines and therapeutic agents for human health challenges.

Charla Wilson, D.C.

Charla Wilson is a chiropractor and wellness advocate who, after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2022, balanced recovery, her chiropractic practice, and single parenthood with balance and gratitude.

Her experience has deepened her passion for empowering women to prioritize their health and embrace self-care. Drawing on yoga, spiritual practice, and a strong support network, Charla helps others stay grounded and resilient through life’s challenges.

Dr. Lashan Peiris

Dr. Peiris is an Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast and General Surgeon and Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta. He is the Clinical Lead of the Comprehensive Breast Care Program for the Edmonton Zone and Surgical Site Lead for the Cross Cancer Institute.

His research focuses on managing high-risk breast lesions, the de-escalation of axillary surgery, formulating an Oncoplastic Database, and predictors of axillary response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with node-positive breast cancer.
