  • Learn about the Treaty 6 Territory and Métis Nation of Alberta and the important roles amisk (beavers) play in building the world around us. Explore the impact beavers have on the land as world builders and why they represent wisdom in the seven sacred teachings. Students will reflect through a journalling activity and practice important skills that build an appreciation for the interconnectedness of nature. Please note—when possible, this program will occur outside in the Medicine Garden.

    THIS PROGRAM CONSISTS OF:

    • One 45-minute in-person session

    Grades 2 - 9

    Grade 2:

    Earth Systems: Students investigate Earth, its landforms, its bodies of water, and its relationship to the Sun.

    Living Systems: How do plants and animals live and grow?

    Grade 3: Students investigate and analyze how materials have the potential to be changed

    • First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities interact with natural materials for specific purposes

    Grade 4: Students investigate the systems of Earth and reflect on how their interconnections sustain life.

    • First Nations, Metis, and Inuit hold understandings of Earth systems that sustain life, including that all things are interconnected
    • Earth’s systems are interconnected and can be impacted by small changes.

    Grade 5: Students analyze climate and connect it to weather conditions and agricultural practices

    • Explain how climate can affect human and other animal activity

    Grade 6: Students investigate the characteristics and components of and interactions within ecosystems

    • Some ecosystems store greenhouse gases and prevent them from being released into the atmosphere such as wetlands

    Grade 7: Unit A Interactions and Ecosystems

    • Investigate and describe the relationship between humans and their environments, and identify related issues and scientific questions – describe examples of interaction and interdependency within an ecosystem

    Grade 8: Unit E Freshwater and Saltwater Systems

    • Analyze factors affecting productivity and species distribution in marine and freshwater environments

    Grade 9: Unit 1 Biological Diversity

    • Investigate and interpret diversity among species and within species, and describe how diversity contributes to species survival
