  • In recognition of Orange Shirt Day, and in the name of Truth and Reconciliation, TELUS World of Science - Edmonton is providing FREE Science Centre General Admission for Indigenous guests on Tuesday, September 30.

    Come experience a full day of culture and community with your family and friends.

    Schedule:

    • 8:00 a.m. – Tipi setup (Outside Main Entrance)
    • 9:00 a.m. – Prayer with Elder Don & smudging ceremony (Lobby)
    • 9:30 a.m. – Lighting of the Quilliq with Navalik Tologanak (Lobby)
    • 10:00 a.m. – Drum Dance with Brenda Egotak (Lobby)
    • 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. – Indigenous vendors market (Lobby)
    • 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. & 1:30–3:30 p.m. – Saskatoon Berry PH Indicator Experiment (Health Zone)
    • 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. & 2:00–4:00 p.m. – Rock painting (STEAM Engine)
    • 12:00 p.m. – Ice cream science (Science Stage)
    • 1:00 p.m. – Round Dance with Dezmond Morningchild (Outdoor Plaza)
    • 1:30 p.m.–2:00 p.m. – Community Walk (Outside)
    • 2:00 p.m. – Tea ceremony with Priscilla Littlechild (Medicine Garden)

Community Walk

Honour Orange Shirt Day with a community walk around the Science Centre, a shared moment of remembrance and commitment to reconciliation.

Starting in front of the Science Centre at 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Indigenous Experiences and Performances - complimentary

Tipi Raising

Join in a traditional tipi raising outside before the Science Centre opens, and take part in this hands-on experience.

In front of the main entrance from 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.

Opening Prayer

Join in an opening prayer led by Elder Don Langford, offering reflection and guidance for Orange Shirt Day.

Main lobby at 9:00 a.m.

Smudging Ceremony

Following the opening prayer, guests are invited to take part in a Smudging Ceremony to cleanse away negative energy and invite positive intentions for the day.

Drum Dance

This powerful cultural expression combines music, movement, storytelling, and community. Performed by Brenda Egotak, a traditional Inuit artist, elder, and knowledge keeper (Inuvialuit).

Main Lobby from 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Lighting of the Quilliq

A traditional Inuit ceremony that honours Indigenous resilience, welcomes the community, and sets a meaningful tone, led by Navalik Tologanak. A qulliq is the traditional oil lamp used within Arctic communities.

Drumming and Round Dance

Dezmond Morningchild, powwow dancer and singer, will be drumming while guests can partake in a round dance to come together as a community.

Outdoor Community Plaza at 1:00 p.m.

Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony at the medicine garden with knowledge keeper Priscilla Littlechild from Maskwacis, who will share teachings about the plants and offer tea to guests. Priscilla Littlechild is a member of the Ermineskin Cree Nation and a survivor of both the 60’s Scoop and Indian Residential School.

Activities - Included with Science Centre General Admission

Rock Painting

Guests are invited to take part in a meaningful rock painting activity where each rock becomes a symbol of reflection, remembrance, and support for Truth and Reconciliation. After the community walk, the painted rocks can be placed around the children’s Tipi or taken home.

The Science Garage from 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 2:00–4:00 p.m.

Saskatoon Berry pH Indicator Experiment

One of the ways that chemists can identify an unknown solution is by testing its pH. Put on a lab coat and safety glasses and work to identify the mystery solutions by measuring their pH with an indicator you make from saskatoon berries!

Health Zone at 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m.

Orange Shirt Pin Craft

Take part in a hands-on activity where you can make your own pin to honour Orange Shirt Day.

Arctic Journey at 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00–3:00 p.m.

Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream

Enjoy some delicious Saskatoon Berry liquid nitrogen ice cream made right before your eyes.

Syncrude Science Stage at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Great Bear Rainforest

Great Bear Rainforest tells the story of one of the rarest animals on Earth — the fabled all-white Spirit Bear.

Honour to Senator Murray Sinclair

Senator Murray Sinclair helped bring the truth of Canada’s residential schools to light as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Alanis Obomsawin shares his award speech alongside powerful stories from survivors. The film honours his work and the children who were taken, while inspiring hope for a better future.

WaaPake (Tomorrow)

For generations, the pain of residential school Survivors has spread through Indigenous families and communities. Dr. Jules Arita Koostachin’s personal documentary WaaPaKe (Tomorrow) looks past this lasting trauma and invites everyone to break the silence and come together in strength and healing.

Purple Pear Restaurant

Bison Burgers
