Fundamentals of Communicating Science is part of Making Science Matter, a suite of evidence-based science communication courses offered by the Science Centre. Perfect for early-career science communicators, this course introduces core interaction and communication skills to help participants share science clearly, confidently, and effectively. Using simple language, creative context, and hands-on strategies, participants learn to make science memorable, engaging, and audience-friendly.
Through interactive discussions and skill-building activities, this course builds a strong foundation in science communication that can be applied across audiences and formats, including public outreach, informal education, presentations, reports, and online content.

This Course Is For
Ideal for early-career science communicators and STEM professionals, including informal educators in science centres, museums, or outreach organizations; researchers engaging with the public; grant writers and fund development officers; and post-secondary students sharing their work online, in print, or in person. No prior communication training is required.
Participants Will Learn
Participants explore how to understand and define audiences, identify their key messages, and use both science storytelling and effective visuals to improve comprehension and memorability. The course also covers practical techniques for crafting clear, accessible messages and audience engagement strategies that work across multiple formats and platforms.
Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will:
- communicate scientific topics clearly and accessibly,
- craft memorable messages using evidence-based techniques like structure, storytelling, and engagement, and
- enhance communication effectiveness through meaningful audience interaction.
