3D Printing PPE
Posted:
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic TELUS World of Science - Edmonton is 3D printing Ear Savers for frontline workers.
We've joined with Alberta 3D PPE, a group recently created by local healthcare professionals, business owners, designers, engineers and other community members, in order to support front-line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group coordinates the production, pick-up and delivery of Ear Savers, Face Shields, and other vital equipment to protect Alberta's frontline workers who are fighting to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ear Savers are meant to relieve the constant pressure and rubbing from the ear-elastics on PPE face-masks. They work by going behind your head, and they have projections or large comb teeth that you can hook your elastics onto, instead of your ears.
We have been using our two Lulzbot Mini 2 3D printers non-stop for since joining the group mid-April, creating over 400 Ear Savers and are on our way to many more. About 40 pieces are being printed every day!
The Ear Savers have been 3D printed with PLA plastic filament. Each Ear Saver uses about 4 grams of filament (Our spools are 1 kg, so with a bit of quick math, that means that one spool can make approx. 250 Ear Savers)
"We are closed, but we are doing everything that we can to not only continue with our mission through the closure, by providing families and students with a variety of science experiments and experiences, but giving back with a small piece of equipment that makes a huge difference for our healthcare workers."
Alan Nursall, President & CEO of TELUS World of Science
